5 Questions With…Mikael Matveinen
5 Questions with Mikael Matveinen
1. Where were you/what did you do before working at Seriously?
Before joining Seriously I made games at Rovio. I’ve also worked on VR software at Aalto University, and I’ve also created mobile and web applications at a consulting firm.
2. What is your current role at Seriously?
I am lead programmer for a new and unannounced Best Fiends title. This means that I do my best to make the team’s visions functional and concrete. My average work day, if there ever is one, ranges from setting up how you select Fiends, to debating which image compression algorithm to use, to coordinating other programmers’ work.
3. What’s your favorite part about your job?
What I’ve always enjoyed about programming is the first moment your very abstract idea actually becomes something you can play on your device. I love the excitement of seeing my own creation working well (or not at all!). At Seriously this is even more wonderful because in a team of creative people, the ideas actually get better since we bounce around wacky concepts and feed off of each other’s creativity.
4. Who is your favorite Fiend or Slug and why?
It’s a tough choice between Brittle and Kwincy. Both are super-cute and relatable! Kwincy probably takes the lead, though, because of his attack animation in Best Fiends Forever.
5. When you are not working at Seriously or playing Best Fiends, what do you enjoy doing?
I quite enjoy long walks on the beach with my girlfriend and chatting about pretty much every topic on earth. Of course, I enjoy other games as well. I’m also into sports, both trying my best to convince myself I’m an athlete and watching other people actually be athletes.
