5 Questions with Robert Parviainen
1. Where were you/what did you do before working at Seriously?
Most recently, I was in charge of the business and analytics department at another gaming studio in Los Angeles. Before working in the gaming industry, I did post-doctoral research at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Reykjavik University in Iceland.
2. What is your current role at Seriously?
I’m the VP of Data Science and senior member of our analytics team. Collectively, our job is to use data to make our Best Fiends games more fun! I make sure that we collect useful and correct in-game data, while also ensuring the privacy of our players and that we have the right tools and infrastructure in place to do this. I also help out where I can with analyzing data, advising and mentoring, and helping to ensure things run as smoothly as possible.
3. What’s your favorite part about your job?
Math and science have always been my best and favorite subjects. Being able to combine them with gaming is awesome – especially when it means working with such a brilliant team!
4. Who is your favorite Fiend or Slug and why?
Beebert and I have the same glasses, so it has to be him! I also love the “Office Slug” — a Slug with a dress shirt, tie, briefcase, and a pair of glasses impractically far away from his eyes.
5. When you are not working at Seriously or playing Best Fiends, what do you enjoy doing?
My wife and I love to travel, so we explore California as often as possible. But if the weather is right, you can find us on the beach! I try my hand at The New York Times crossword puzzle every day except Fridays and Saturdays because those are just too hard. We also have a big fluffy cat that has traveled around the world with us all the way from Australia — she demands quite a lot of our time and attention.
